Why Are the Penguins Looking Extra Fluffy?

If you notice our penguins looking a little more scruffy than usual, don’t worry, it’s all part of a natural (and very important) process called molting!

At SeaWorld Orlando, our penguins go through what’s known as a “catastrophic molt,” where they shed and regrow all their feathers at once. During this time, their sleek, waterproof coats are replaced with fresh new feathers to keep them warm and ready for the water.

While molting, penguins take a short break from swimming since their feathers aren’t fully waterproof just yet. Instead, they spend more time on land—and may look a little extra fluffy or patchy along the way! It may look a bit funny, but this once-a-year transformation is essential to keeping our penguins healthy, happy, and ready to dive back in!
