Restoring Seagrass in the Indian River Lagoon
Healthy seagrass meadows are essential to the Indian River Lagoon, providing food for manatees and sea turtles and habitat for the fish that dolphins depend on.
This summer, Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute scientists and their partners planted more than 4,000 seagrass units and 135,000 young hard clams near Sebastian Inlet to explore new ways to support seagrass restoration. When most of the newly planted seagrass disappeared within weeks, researchers discovered an important challenge: In a lagoon with so little seagrass remaining, new growth quickly becomes a food source for hungry animals. Now, the team is using what they learned to explore ways to better protect young seagrass and improve future restoration efforts.
Support Florida’s oceans by choosing the Discover Florida’s Oceans specialty license plate. Proceeds support Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute’s conservation work.

Can You Speak Sea Lion?
Sea lions are known for their playful personalities, but did you know they're also very vocal? From barks and growls to other unique calls, sea lions use sound to communicate with one another. Mothers can even recognize their pups by their individual calls, helping them find each other in a busy colony.
Next time you see our sea lions at Pacific Pointe Preserve, listen closely, you might just hear them having a conversation of their own!
