Dolphin FAQs

How do dolphins sleep?

Dolphins can sleep in three different ways. They can sleep while swimming very slowly and steadily near the water's surface, floating on top of the water, or lying on the seabed in shallow water, surfacing periodically to breathe. Only half of their brain sleeps at a time, so they stay alert enough to keep taking breaths of air.

How long can dolphins hold their breath?

Most dolphins can hold their breath for up to 10 minutes. In some cases, a dolphin will swim to the surface to take a breath every two or three minutes. Experience a dolphin encounter by booking tickets to SeaWorld Orlando

How long do dolphins live?

There are several different types of dolphins, each with its own unique lifespan. Bottlenose dolphins, like the ones who live at SeaWorld Orlando and Discovery Cove, can live up to 30 years, and some dolphins can live as long as 50 years

How smart are dolphins?

Many scientists believe that dolphins, next to humans, are the smartest creatures on Earth. Watch closely to see how intelligent our dolphins are during your Florida dolphin experience. Then learn even more about the bottlenose dolphin during a presentation at Dolphin Stadium.

What do dolphins eat?

In the wild, dolphins eat whatever sea animals they can find in their local habitat, including fish, jellyfish, squid, octopus, and shrimp. During our dolphin encounters, our guests get opportunities to feed dolphins in person.
