Lunar New Year 2020January 17, 2020
Lunar New Year 2020 shines bright right here at SeaWorld San Diego. We’re elated to bring you an array of culinary deliciousness, interactive performances, and spectacular acrobats to ring in the New Year with the tastes and sounds of Asia.
The History of the Lunar New Year
Did you know the New Year is based on the cycles of the moon? Otherwise known as the lunisolar, this calendar is used throughout Asia. It’s been said the origins of the Lunar New Year started with Nian, a mythical creature who would eat nearby villages’ crops and livestock. It feared the color red and loud noises, which is why red is used during the celebrations along with drums and fireworks. We’re so excited to include some these incredible elements at our Lunar New Year 2020 celebration at SeaWorld San Diego.
2020, Year of the Rat
The Chinese Zodiac is filled with very beautiful and very lucky associations with animals. Not only that, but it’s been said that the year you were born means you have the same personality of that given animal. This year is the year of the Rat; and it occurs every 12 years! Did you know that it’s the first sign in the Chinese zodiac sequence, and represents a new day? Pretty fitting for a new decade! The lucky numbers of the rat are 2 and 3, and their lucky colors are blue, gold, and green. Are you a rat? If you were born in 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, or 2020, you’re one! Rats represent an array of beautiful qualities such as being both hard-working, and frugal, which can make the Rat wealthy.

Festival Stage Performances
Believe it or not, we will have even more performances this year. One thing you and your family will experience is an interactive performance of martial arts. Chinese martial arts was important when it came to training ancient soldiers. It originates from Xia Dynasty, otherwise known as the first dynasty in the Chinese historiography. Over the years, martial arts began to cultivate many philosophical aspects, such as the Daoist philosophy. While Daoism can be religious, it also focuses on the importance health and exercise.
From Taiko drumming to Lion Dancing, learn all about the regal acts you can find throughout the celebration here.
